PANDA MDC

AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt Module Date Concentrator

Project goals

The PANDA experiment (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) investigates the strong interaction in reactions between an antiproton beam and a stationary target. The PANDA detector consists of several different sub-detectors for trajectory tracking, particle identification and calorimetry. The Micro-Vertex Detector (MVD), as the innermost part of the tracking system, enables precise tracking and detection of primary and secondary charged particles to determine their decay points. It uses silicon pixel and strip sensors. To read out the double-sided silicon strip sensors, the application-specific front-end ASICs ToAST currently under development at INFN Torino, is used. For combining the data streams of multiple ToAST ASICs and for further processing, a so-called Module Data Concentrator-ASIC (MDC) is provided. The data of the ToAST front ends will be multiplexed, processed and forwarded to subsequent stages. The MDC-ASIC is an essential building block of the MVD detector. Within this PANDA MDC project this MDC-ASIC will be developed.

ITIV participation

ITIV is developing the MDC architecture together with IPE. ITIV is concentrating on the development of the FPGA prototype and the digital architecture. Special attention must be paid to the radiation resistance of the architecture while processing large amounts of data.
