He completed his doctorate in the fields of optics and laser technology in cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH. In terms of content, he deals with questions of laser safety for optical scanning systems, such as lidar sensors and data glasses. During his doctorate, methods for determining retinal, laser-induced damage threshold values were further developed, both experimentally in the laboratory and simulatively with a retinal layer model in thermal modeling.

The damage thresholds and conclusions thus determined form the basis for the international laser safety standard, which is currently being revised. The formation of asymmetrical and elongated retinal images and exposure scenarios are highlighted.

The results obtained contribute to a more precise determination of laser-induced damage thresholds and thus to a general further development of the experimental method of ex vivo explant experiments. This is particularly relevant for laser safety committees and the work thus potentially contributes to product safety as well as the product performance of laser products in the context of the laser safety standard.
