Celebration of the 100th birthday of Karl Steinbuch

On October 13, 2017 , the Institute of Information Processing Technology (ITIV) commemorated its founder Karl Steinbuch, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on June 15, 2017, with an event in his honor.

After the opening by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eric Sax, who moderated the event, and the welcome by the President of KIT, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Jürgen Becker looked back on Steinbuch's innovations in terms of reality and the future.

Prof. Dr. h. c. Hasso Plattner, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SAP SE and founder of the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, concluded the event with his presentation "From the learning matrix to deep learning - Karl Steinbuch, the visionary from Karlsruhe". Afterwards, Prof. Plattner was once again presented with his diploma thesis from 1968, which he wrote under Karl Steinbuch, by the President of KIT, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka, after almost 50 years.

“Irrespective of his scientific achievements, KIT distanced itself from Karl Steinbuch in November 2023. In this connection, KIT decided to rename its information technology center Scientific Computing Center (previously Steinbuch Centre for Computing). This decision is based on latest findings of historian A. Guhl, according to which Karl Steinbuch advocated unacceptable acts of war as a young man during the Nazi era. After his retirement, Steinbuch increasingly adopted extreme right-wing positions.” (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)
