Research interests

  • Design, test and management of Over The Air (OTA) software updates for connected vehicles
The introduction of the OTA technology in the automotive industry brings many advantages to both the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and the vehicle owner. It significantly reduces the maintenance costs of embedded software and makes update processes more convenient and faster. Furthermore, OTA is an important part of the "Internet of Things" and a core feature for the realization of future autonomous driving functions. However, the introduction of OTA technology brings several challenges: In addition to the obvious security risks, the increasing complexity of the electric/electronic architecture, with up to over a hundred networked ECUs, requires new methods for testing and managing the software components to be updated in conjunction with the enormous number of variants and configurations in the field.

  • Methods for model-based development of updatable electric/electronic architectures
For the design and verification of OTA updates, computational methods such as model-based development, software-in-the-loop (SiL), and virtual testing of embedded systems are investigated and evaluated for their efficiency and performance. The focus is on ensuring the functional safety of the system (cf. ISO 26262, SOTIF) after each functional update performed. As a use case, updates of driver assistance systems of automated driving are considered. For the implementation, different tools from the state of the art and science are used and, if necessary, combined or extended.
