The main goal of this project is to design and build innovative intelligent smart energy meter infrastructure that can monitor electric distribution network for Ethiopian Electricity Utility (EEU) using advanced measurement and communications with Internet of Things (IoT) approach. EEU has huge challenge in collecting energy bill and revenue collection, high technical and commercial losses (~40%), outdated infrastructure, lack of real time information, data and monitoring system. Long range (LoRa) technology will be employed for smart metering network, distribution transformer and transmission line monitoring with low-cost hardware and ICT based services to address major socio-economic issues for Ethiopian utility. The innovative smart meter will have a direct impact in efficient billing, load management, tariff management, and theft control. The utility company will gain continuous access to the metering data, enabling them to provide exact billing information and quickly identify meter device fails or device tampering in the field.
The project will be administrated under ITIV leadership. The design and implementation of prototype, the entire system, consisting of smart meters, sensor nodes, network topology setup, concentrator gateways and the central station will be implemented first at ITIV lab centers. The core network as well as software for real time command control, testing and diagnostic is also part of work that is expected at ITIV.
