In this course, the functionality of a lidar sensor is explained and put into context with use cases in the automotive and industrial sectors. To this end, typical criteria for evaluating performance are first presented. The concept of the sensor is then discussed in detail, with all relevant components being presented individually first. In a second step, they are qualitatively related to each other and the overall system is quantitatively analyzed using the lidar equation. Finally, the interaction of the components is considered with regard to sensible combinations in order to derive optimized design approaches.
