Internship System-on-Chip

Recommended prior knowledge

  • Knowledge of Verilog design, e.g. from Design of Digital Circuits (2312683)
  • Knowledge of analog circuit design (amplifier circuits, stability considerations), e.g. from Design of Analog Circuits (2312664)
  • Knowledge of VHDL design, e.g. from Hardware Modeling and Simulation (2311608)
  • Knowledge of simulation of digital circuits, e.g. from Hardware Modeling and Simulation (2311608)
  • Knowledge of hardware design processes and algorithms, e.g. from Hardware Synthesis and Optimization (2311619)

Goals

Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of digital and analog circuit design and hardware-related software programming. In practice, students will be able to apply these methods in the following areas using a current system-on-chip architecture:

  • Simulation of the designed digital and analog circuits
  • Debugging the implementations at simulation and realization level
  • Verification of the overall system developed using test benches

In addition, they can apply the hardware/software code design approach and can evaluate implementation targets based on the given requirements (FPGA and ASIC).

Contents

In the practical course System-on-Chip, a fully-fledged mixed-signal hardware architecture for audio playback is developed on the basis of a system-on-chip (SoC).

The system design includes the creation of necessary subcomponents, their integration into an overall system as well as the simulation and verification of the individual components and the overall system. A prototype is implemented and tested on an FPGA basis. The integration is then prepared for possible ASIC production. Analog circuits are also considered and designed in order to build an audio amplifier.
