Girls' Day at ITIV: Discover technology - experience microcontrollers for yourself

<Text wird generiert, bitte warten...>

ITIV once again opened its doors for this year's Girls' Day at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Under the title "Green thumbs through technology - the world of microcontrollers for beginners", the participants immersed themselves in the world of microelectronics in a practical way.

After a welcome and an initial introduction by Dr. Tanja Harbaum, the young researchers worked in small groups on PCs in the ITIV pool room. Together with our doctoral students Ann-Therese Nägele, Christian Maximilian Karle and Henrik Scheidt, she provided technical support throughout the day; the entire team supported the practical set-up and explained technical contexts.

The aim of the workshop was to become developers themselves: The participants wrote the code with which LEDs indicate the status of a plant and implemented an irrigation function at the touch of a button. The end result was a functioning, self-built and programmed circuit that the participants were allowed to take home with them - including the possibility of further automating the watering of the plant.

Girls' Day at ITIV impressively demonstrated how important early practical experience is in getting young people interested in STEM subjects - and how much fun technology can be.
