On February 7, 2026, things got really lively in the NTI lecture hall at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT): A large group of interested students took part in the Tiny Tapeout Workshop, organized by the KIT Chipdesign House team - with the commitment and support of Prof. Jürgen Becker, Prof. Mehdi Tahoori, Vladimir Sidorenko, Dr. Heba Khdr and Sergej Meschkov. The aim of the day was to experience for themselves how a chip is created - from the first logic component to the final tapeout.

Special guest Matt Venn from Tiny Tapeout was on hand to lead the workshop sessions and immediately created an open, motivating atmosphere. His rap interludes to introduce the exercises were a particular highlight. The participants were focused throughout, asked lots of questions and worked hard on their designs.

Tiny Tapeout enables extremely affordable chip production in very small batches - ideal for students who want to gain real hardware experience and would otherwise not have access to their own tapeouts.

At the end, there was a small raffle of development boards, stickers for everyone and very positive feedback: the event was rated with an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

The designs developed in the workshop are now going into production. As soon as the chips arrive at KIT, KCH is planning further events where students can test their own circuits - a real highlight!
