Project goals

Handwriting and digital media exist without much overlap. The development of numerous digital pens has not changed this much. Studies show again and again that a handwritten elaboration leads to a higher quality of the result compared to typing a text. This means that without handwriting, a knowledge society loses one of its most potent tools. Until now, the learning of handwriting had to be continuously checked and controlled by a teacher or parents. By using suitable computer programs and an electronic pen, it will be possible to accompany this learning process automatically. The aim of the joint project "KIHT" is the development of an intelligent learning device which supports the learning of handwriting. The learning device should be similar to a normal pen in all important characteristics in order to achieve the greatest possible success. It is important to use paper and pen as writing utensils in order to optimally simulate the normal writing process. The writing instrument used here is an electronic pen that has inertial sensors. The use of a tablet computer makes it possible to adapt the exercises individually for each student and to synchronize and save the data automatically. The electronic pen developed in this project should be able to connect to all common mobile devices and interact with an app. While the French side is mainly dedicated to software and AI algorithms, the German side will deal with the integration of suitable AI concepts into the embedded hardware. This will distribute the complexity of the overall system across both software and hardware, enabling fast and efficient AI execution. The planned intelligent learning device is to be made available to the widest possible range of users.

ITIV Participation

ITIV develops various concepts for the integration of AI algorithms adapted to the embedded hardware. This distributes the complexity of the overall system to both software and hardware, enabling fast and efficient AI execution. The goal is to enable online reconstruction of the pen trace from sensor data and to develop efficient and miniaturizing hardware that can interact with all commercially available mobile devices. A practical test with a demonstration system is to prove the success of the work at the end of the three-year project.
