Development of a sensor platform for behavior analysis of zoo animals

Context

In the Zoological City Garden Karlsruhe, endangered animal species are specifically bred and thus preserved. In order to keep the animals in a species-appropriate manner, keepers and veterinarians need to know the animals' behavior and adapt environments and situations if necessary. For permanent operation, a solution for local signal recording and processing is needed. Currently, audio data is collected using a freely available audio recorder. Since this does not meet the long-term requirements in terms of configurability and performance, we would like to develop our own platform. This platform should be designed in such a way that additional functions can be implemented.

Goals of the work

  • Determination of the requirements for this with regard to the given structures in the zoo (The final work takes place in parts also on site.)
  • Development of an embedded system for audio signal processing and recording
  • Extension of the embedded system with selected peripherals (MA only)
  • Commissioning of the system

Requirements

  • Knowledge in PCB design
  • Experience in hardware related programming
