Evaluation and comparison of current V2X simulation systems
Context
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) increase the safety and reliability of vehicles by exchanging information via vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication.
Several simulation systems are used today to investigate these messages. For example, SUMO in combination with the OMNeT++ module Veins enables the coupling of traffic dynamics and network behavior and supports the generation of CAM and CPM messages. CARLA complements this possibility with highly realistic sensor and image simulation and offers extensions for a V2X sensor for message transmission. In addition to these, there are numerous other simulators. All simulators share the goal of realistically mapping the exchange of information between vehicles and infrastructure in order to identify optimization potential for safety messages and validate future ITS concepts.
Objectives
- The following is to be investigated as part of this work
- Analysis of the current status of V2X simulation tools
- Comparison of V2X message generation and processing
- Investigation of the realism of V2X simulations
- Creation of a catalog of criteria for the selection of suitable V2X simulators
Prerequisites
- Basic programming skills (C++ and/or Python)
- Knowledge of Linux and virtualization (VM, Docker)
- Structured and independent way of working
