Congratulations to Vladimir Sidorenko on successfully completing his doctorate!

The ITIV team extends its warmest congratulations to Vladimir Sidorenko on the successful defense of his dissertation titled “Architecture of a Synchronous High-Bandwidth Real-Time Network with Sub-Nanosecond Latency Determinism at the Hardware Level.”
The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Becker (ITIV). Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Wojciech Zabolotny from the Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) served as co-examiner.
Vladimir Sidorenko’s research has focused on high-performance systems for nuclear physics. The CBM experiment at the FAIR accelerator investigates the structure of matter—similar to that found in neutron stars. This generates enormous amounts of data that must be processed in real time.
For such experiments, Vladimir developed a novel system architecture that enables extremely precise time synchronization across more than 200 distributed measurement points. The challenge: All components must operate in perfect sync, with a deviation of less than 200 picoseconds.
By way of comparison: one picosecond is to one second as one second is to 32,000 years.
The Timing and Fast Control System (TFC) he developed was successfully deployed in the CBM experiment and achieves a precision of just 43 picoseconds—almost five times better than required. It has been in productive operation since 2025 and was officially approved for the experiment.
The dissertation builds on Vladimir Sidorenko’s long-standing research at ITIV. His research focuses on optimizing latency in optical inter-FPGA communication, time synchronization in distributed FPGA networks, and flow control mechanisms for data-intensive real-time systems. These topics form important foundations for modern large-scale scientific experiments and high-performance real-time data acquisition systems.
