CeCaS Demonstrator Vehicle Arrives at ITIV

The capabilities of future Central Car Servers are becoming apparent.

A demonstration vehicle from the CeCaS (Central Car Server) research project has arrived at ITIV. It showcases key findings from the collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry and will be used in the future for demonstrations, courses, and public outreach.

The target of CeCaS was to develop a high-performance, automotive-grade supercomputing platform for future vehicle architectures. This effort was driven by the ever-increasing volumes of data and computational demands of modern, automated, and connected vehicles. To address these challenges, new approaches for high-performance processors, hardware accelerators, and vehicle and software architectures were explored.

The ITIV contributed its expertise, particularly in the development, integration, and evaluation of AI accelerators for future central car server systems. In addition, methods for the efficient distribution of AI applications within the vehicle, as well as methods for evaluating corresponding hardware solutions, were investigated.

The scientific leads for the project were Prof. Dr. Jürgen Becker and Prof. Dr. Alois Knoll from the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The demonstrator, now stationed at ITIV, performs object detection on eight parallel high-resolution camera streams. In doing so, it clearly illustrates the computing power that future vehicle architectures must provide for AI-based functions. At the same time, the vehicle demonstrates the performance and robustness of modern central car server concepts under high data and computational loads.
