Development of a hardware platform for behavior monitoring of zoo animals

Giraffe
.

In the Karlsruhe Zoological Garden, endangered animal species are specifically bred and thus preserved. To improve the care of exotic species, keepers and veterinarians need to know the animals' behavior and adapt environments and situations if necessary. New methods of big data analysis can help capture, analyze, and ultimately interpret animal behavior patterns. For this, technology of image acquisition is necessary.

Aims of the work

  • Development of a camera platform for the observation of animals in larger enclosures of the Karlsruhe Zoo (parts of the thesis will also take place on site).
  • Analysis of requirements for such a platform, including data protection (hiding of visitors etc.) and evaluation of different sensor options
  • Hardware setup and commissioning

We expect

  • Basic knowledge in hardware and embedded software
