Background

Microarchitectural attacks can be considered as a special form of side-channel security analysis. Attacks in security can be assumed as attempts to expose, access, alter, disable or destroy unauthorized information, and cause harm or damage to a system’s components. Side-channel concept itself is originally aimed to define information from cryptanalysis relating to cryptography.

At the present time, side-channel concept will not only focus on cryptanalysis, but also to analyze some extra source of information generated by the internal operation of a system.

A Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) during its operation may suffer microarchitectural attacks performing some unauthorized data expose, access, alteration, etc. The attacks may cause of data breaching or any malfunctions of the components of a system.

 

Tasks

  • Create software-based application(s) generating two or more microarchitectural attacks at a processing system (PS) of a MPSoC
  • Implement and run the application(s) into a Xilinx Zynq Platform, and
  • Analyze the influence of these attacks 

 

Required skills

  • Student of electrical engineering or informatics
  • Have a good background in software-based hardware development using C/C++ languages
  • Knowledge and basic experience in RTL coding using VHDL
  • Have a strong interest in learning about hardware security
