Required qualifications
Attending the lecture Optical Engineering, course code 23730 (Thursday, 15:45-17:15, room 003, building 11.20) during the same term is highly recommended.
Motivation
The industry’s demand for engineers with knowledge in the areas of optics and optics design in addition to their electrical engineering and IT skills has been growing for years. Applications of optical systems can be found in a wide field of industries, from opto-electronics, communication and measurement technology to biomedical technology and consumer electronics, but the demand for engineers with training on these topics cannot be satisfied by the German universities. That is why the ITIV holds a lab course where basic skills in working with tools for design and optimization of optical systems are taught.
Course contents
Simulation of simple optical elements (lenses, mirror, prism)
Simulation of simple optical systems (eyeglasses, magnifying glass, microscope, binoculars, telescope)
Imaging errors (aberrations)
Evaluation of imaging quality of optical systems
Computer-aided optimization of optical systems
Fibre-optical systems and laser
Diffractive elements
Illumination design
