Wind tunnel design for lab test of laser Doppler wind sensor

Background

Due to a significant increasing of amount of electricity generated from wind energy, Wind Turbines (WTs) become larger and move to more inaccessible locations like offshore. The increasing size of WTs leads some problems during the constructions, installations and operations. For example, the offshore WTs have a high Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cost due to the hard accessibility and hardware failure. The large WT leads a strong torque fluctuation from the wind speed turbulence which cause a high material stresses and mechanical parts damages. The cost of manufacturing a large offshore WT with a longer lifetime as that of the smaller one is very high. The motivation of this project is to design a laser based Doppler wind sensor for active control of wind turbine in order to reduce the damage and material stress from wind fluctuation.

Task

During your work, you need to design a wind tunnel which suites the requirements of lab setup test. The wind tunnel should be possible to create different wind speed, input different size of aerosols, and possible to detect the wind speed.

Requirements

  • High self-motivation
  • Lab experiments experence
